A mature architect with great depth of experience, John brings the same passion to large and small projects.

John has 34 years experience in architectural practice and has been a registered Architect since 1991. He studied at Victoria University of Wellington, winning the NZIA Prizes for both Building Science and Architecture and a University Senior Scholarship.

After gaining experience with well-known, design-oriented practices in Christchurch and Nelson, John set up practice in Wellington in 1996. From April 2011 he became a Director of Wright & Gray Architects Ltd.

John is passionate about the potential of architecture to improve the quality of life for all in the community, regardless of income or social status. He has wide-ranging experience with many different building types. John’s specializations include commercial interior fitouts, healthcare, and the renovation of heritage houses. He has completed well over 200 residential projects of all types.

Clients say that John is a good listener and communicator, is both creative and practical, and that he delivers projects that are cost-effective and well managed from start to finish.

John and his family live in a house designed in 1969 by Wellington architect Dudley Roy. John enjoys building, and over 22 years and 6 stages he has extended and renovated to make the most of its favoured location.
