“Our renovation was always going to be complicated, and John and the team at Wright & Gray were more than up to the challenge. The design is thoughtful, practical, and an absolute delight to live in. John remedied the problems that decades of DIY enthusiasm had created, addressed issues created by a difficult site, and then created a stunning look and feel in the new parts of the build. John brought integrity and inspiration to all stages of the work. John and the broader W&G team then supported us throughout the process, managing a complex set of relationships to ensure the project stayed on track.

We’re thrilled with the results and would highly recommend John and the team and Wright & Gray”

- Owner

This ambitious project on a steep site involved a complete renovation of the existing bungalow, an addition of a new level below, and a new outdoor living area. The owners often work from home and also needed more space for house guests.

The new basement addition provides a master bedroom suite, laundry and a large home office for two. The design respectfully contrasts with the original weatherboard house. Perched high above the Ngaio Gorge, the new spaces have floor-to-ceiling glazing to enjoy the views, without being overlooked. Inside, the journey from original to new delights the senses with hard and soft materials and contrasting levels of daylight.

Built-in joinery designed by the architect houses the owners’ library and displays their favourite Lego models.

On the upper level, the living spaces were opened up, with a new gas fire defining the sitting and dining areas. The bathroom was extended to make space for a soaking tub and double vanity. The interior finishes and furnishings on this level highlight the best of the original features with a nod to the bungalow style.

Outside is a sheltered, sunny and private deck with outdoor dining and a hot tub, perfect after a day in the office.
