The Ngaio “railway cottages” are a cherished part of Wellington’s heritage. Wright & Gray Architects Ltd have now renovated two of these unique homes. Changes to the original houses are tightly controlled by planning laws, and all alterations require resource consent approval.
The owners needed more floorspace for a growing family, so the challenge was to design a substantial addition that would not compromise the streetscape or integrity of the house. The extension provides both access and outlook to the large and attractive back yard.
“John and his team worked with us to come up with a design that was sympathetic with the character and heritage nature of our property but cleverly turned a small cottage into a family home with modern amenities and features. The end result is a family home that is great to live in and meets our needs.
The way the design was formulated enabled us to construct the extension with minimal disruption to home life.”
