Kimberley Centre in Levin provides residential services for people with an intellectual disability. More than 370 Kimberley residents were relocated to community living.
We designed and documented 28 houses on 19 sites within an extremely challenging timeframe. Focus on individual needs and choices required intensive design and consultation.
The designs are as varied as the localities and the residents. The relocations aimed to provide them with improved residential services in a community setting.
The new house shown here is the largest of three situated on this particular site.
The design focused on the needs of the individuals, and the choices made required intensive design and consultation.
As the residents spend the majority of their time at their houses, the design needed to provide usable outdoor spaces, feel open and accessible while still providing for the safety of the residents and caregivers.
